5/25 – South Bend vs. Fort Wayne

The Silver Hawks will try to avoid the sweep against Fort Wayne, who hasn’t swept a three-game road series since August of last season. Although the first two games have featured a ton of hitting – 12 combined runs in game one followed by 22 combined runs last night – game three should be about pitching. Two of the league’s best going head-to-head. Big news at Coveleski Stadium is that the new splash pad in the right field corner is going to be ready to go tonight along with the team store out beyond the left field wall.

5/8 vs. Great Lakes

Fidel Pena with another big hit last night as the Hawks snapped a two-game losing streak. The Hawks have not lost more than two games in a row at any point this season. Archie Bradley takes the ball for South Bend as the Hawks try to salvage a split in the four-game series.

Travel note: We are heading to Fort Wayne after the game tonight in advance of a 11:05 a.m. first pitch against the TinCaps. Typically, we do not stay overnight in Fort Wayne, but the early start time has created a rare exception.

Perfect Game Field – Cedar Rapids

I remembered to bring my camera cord back from the stadium. Below are some photos from our recent trip to Perfect Game Field in Cedar Rapids Iowa. I presume Bobby Stone’s game one home run landed somewhere near that road that runs behind the right field wall.

Today was tight squeeze with an 11 a.m. first pitch. I will post game notes tomorrow afternoon before the double-header. I will also take some photos of Modern Woodmen Park tomorrow afternoon.

Rainy in the Quad Cities

I had hoped to post photos of Perfect Game Field and Modern Woodmen Park but I left my camera cord at the stadium… so that will have to wait until tomorrow. The view at Modern Woodmen Park is terrific as the stadium is right on the banks of the Mississippi. The rain today reminded me of certain instances in the past where the river flooded the areas surrounding Modern Woodmen Park.

Below is a picture from the 2008 floods… At one point a temporary scaffolding bridge was constructed, extending 375 feet from the sandbags in front of the main entrance all the way to River Drive.

We aren’t in danger of flooding at the moment, but even if we were, there’s no guarantee that there wouldn’t be a baseball game!

4/28 @ Cedar Rapids

Hawks trying for the sweep tonight in Cedar Rapids. Kernels as a team have combined for just six hits through the first two games of the series.

Even colder today than it was yesterday. Not as windy, though.

We leave Cedar Rapids after the game and make the short trip to Davenport, Iowa.

4/26 @ Cedar Rapids

The Hawks are red hot after wrapping up a 5-1 home stand with a three-game sweep of Wisconsin. The Tom Belza-Chris Ellison one-two punch at the top of the order has really triggered things. It bumped Ender Inciarte down to the bottom of the order and with him heating up as well, you have a really balanced lineup right now. Mixing in a few Marc Bourgeois long balls certainly help as well.

Oh by the way, Silver Hawks starting pitchers allowed one earned run during the three game set against Wisconsin.

It’s off to Iowa!
