5/25 – South Bend vs. Fort Wayne
The Silver Hawks will try to avoid the sweep against Fort Wayne, who hasn’t swept a three-game road series since August of last season. Although the first two games have featured a ton of hitting – 12 combined runs in game one followed by 22 combined runs last night – game three should be about pitching. Two of the league’s best going head-to-head. Big news at Coveleski Stadium is that the new splash pad in the right field corner is going to be ready to go tonight along with the team store out beyond the left field wall.

4/17 @ Lansing Game Notes
The Lugnut top ranked pitching staff (2.02 ERA through 11 games) was as advertised last night, as was Archie Bradley, who tallied a career-high eight strikeouts over five no-hit innings. A combination of four Lugnuts pitchers merged to strikeout 16, including eight in a row at one point late in the game. Archie struck out seven of the final 11 he faced and was particularly strong the second time through the order for a second straight start. Archie now has 22 strikeouts over 16 innings.
Tonight Jeff Shields vies for his first win of 2012 after looking razor sharp last week against Dayton.
It’s another cold and breezy day in Lansing. Just stepped outside and the temperature was in the upper 40s. Should bode well for the pitchers tonight.

4/16 @ Lansing
Very windy today in Lansing just as it was in South Bend when we left this morning. The Lugnuts are off to a great start – they won their first seven games – then lost to West Michigan – but have since won two straight. Great pitching matchup in game one tonight as it pits a pair of first-rounders. Right-hander Archie Bradley – drafted seventh overall in 2011 – faces righty Noah Syndergaard, who was taken 38th overall in 2010.
The Hawks offense busted out yesterday afternoon for a season-high 10 runs on a season-high 13 hits. Chris Ellison (4-for-5, 2 RBI) and Tom Belza (4-for-4, 5 RBI) were a combined 8-for-9 with seven batted in. J.R. Bradley had a bounce back start, allowing just a run on two hits over six innings.

Pitching probables
The players arrived in earnest today and with so many returning players everyone seemed very comfortable with each other and with South Bend. Not a total surprise, considering a good chunk of the team either played together in Missoula or South Bend last season. Needless to say, it was a good sign from a “team chemistry” standpoint.
The team got its uniforms and were introduced to the Hawks Front Office. After that they had batting practice followed by a simulated game. I have posted pictures of said game below.
A few of the pitchers who tossed in the simulated game were J.R. Bradley and Jesse Darrah — Jesse is slated to start the Monday home opener and Bradley has the Tuesday tilt vs. Fort Wayne. So pitching today keeps both of them on schedule. And that brings me to the topic at hand… the tentative pitching probables for this weekend. Is “tentative pitching probables” an oxymoron? Don’t think so… just redundant I think.
Thursday: RHP Archie Bradley
Friday: RHP Jeffrey Shields
Saturday: LHP John Pedrotty
Sunday: Off
Monday: RHP Jesse Darrah
Tuesday: RHP J.R. Bradley
Again, subject to change, and if it does … you will be the first to know.
A self-promotional programming note. Thursdays game — and all games for that matter — can be found here. I will also post a link in the blog. You can also click “Multimedia / Silver Hawks Broadcasts” on http://www.silverhawks.com. Whatever floats your boat, really.
Dbacks Prospect Watch: Archie Bradley
While the roster won’t be announced until later this week or over the weekend, it would not be surprising to see Archie Bradley – the seventh overall pick in 2011 – donning a Silver Hawks uniform this spring.
According to the Baseball America Prospect Handbook, “he’ll get his first real taste of pro ball at low Class A South Bend to start 2012.” The only other feasible option would be to do what Trevor Bauer did last year and go straight to High-A Visalia. Bradley, though, briefly got his feet wet in the Pioneer League at the end of last season while Bauer began his pro career in Visalia.
Bradley’s fastball sits 92-98 MPH with a power curve between 82-85 MPH. He’s been rumored to have occasionally exceeded 100 MPH.
Barring any unforeseen setbacks, he’ll likely move through the minors rather rapidly. That said, there’s a chance that journey will include a trip to South Bend, at least that’s what the scribes and pundits are saying.
Check out what former Hawk and current big leaguer Miguel Montero had to say about Bradley here …
A prospect profile on Archie here …
Also, if Bradley hadn’t signed last summer he would have likely played quarterback at Oklahoma. Bradley is from Broken Arrow, Okla.
Again, this is all speculation, but we shall see…
