4/26 @ Cedar Rapids

The Hawks are red hot after wrapping up a 5-1 home stand with a three-game sweep of Wisconsin. The Tom Belza-Chris Ellison one-two punch at the top of the order has really triggered things. It bumped Ender Inciarte down to the bottom of the order and with him heating up as well, you have a really balanced lineup right now. Mixing in a few Marc Bourgeois long balls certainly help as well.

Oh by the way, Silver Hawks starting pitchers allowed one earned run during the three game set against Wisconsin.

It’s off to Iowa!

4/10 vs. FW

Fort Wayne: 8

South Bend: 1

Final

A few points on tonight’s game:

  • It was cold. The temperature was right around 35 degrees at first pitch and we had a few flurries. Scary to think that it still could have been a lot worse. The good news is we got the game in… the bad news is that it kept many of the casual fans away. To those braved the cold, thank you.
  • Cody Hebner is very good. I’m not comfortable saying Hebner is the best pitcher the Hawks have faced this season because who am I to make that call? Every pitcher in the Midwest League is talented. Every one. However, I will say that Hebner’s performance was the best the Hawks have faced to this point. Hebner was hitting 95 MPH early in the game and his first six outs were strikeouts.
  • It was pretty cold.
  • Defense was a bright spot. Josh Parr played a rock solid shortstop and the double play he helped turn in the first inning was hardly routine. Matt Helm continues to pick it at third. He also drove in another run and extended his hitting streak to five (as did Ender Inciarte).
  • J.R. Bradley had a rough first inning, settled down in the second and third innings, and was chased from the game int he fourth. J.R. didn’t walk anyone and the TinCaps earned every run they got. It will be interesting to see how J.R. responds next start.

Tomorrow should be fun as fans get to see Archie 2.0 for the first time at the Cove. He should be pretty fired up to pitch at home — he wasn’t too happy with the loss in his first start. Hawks have a chance to take the series from Fort Wayne.

Best,

TL

4/9 vs. FW

Last night was a very clean with for the Hawks… a few things that stood out.

Jesse Darrah pitched very confidently… he seemed in control all night, even when the TinCaps got their lone run off him in the first inning. Darrah really settled in during innings two and three. He retired the TinCaps six-up, six-down and the ball never left the infield.

Big Inning: The fourth inning was South Bend’s biggest inning this season as they posted four runs on four hits and eight men came to the plate. Bobby Stone and Roidany Aguila showed off their power, particularly Aguila who hit his to the opposite field.

Great crowd: The crowd last night was terrific. The attendance of 4,033 is the Silver Hawks larges since a crowd of 4,631 watched the Silver Hawks on July 8 of last year. At last year’s home opener on April 11, the paid attendance was 1,627.

We’ll have game notes and an update later.

J.R. Bradley makes his 2012 debut tonight at The Cove.

Pitching probables

The players arrived in earnest today and with so many returning players everyone seemed very comfortable with each other and with South Bend. Not a total surprise, considering a good chunk of the team either played together in Missoula or South Bend last season. Needless to say, it was a good sign from a “team chemistry” standpoint.

The team got its uniforms and were introduced to the Hawks Front Office. After that they had batting practice followed by a simulated game. I have posted pictures of said game below.

A few of the pitchers who tossed in the simulated game were J.R. Bradley and Jesse Darrah — Jesse is slated to start the Monday home opener and Bradley has the Tuesday tilt vs. Fort Wayne. So pitching today keeps both of them on schedule. And that brings me to the topic at hand… the tentative pitching probables for this weekend. Is “tentative pitching probables” an oxymoron? Don’t think so… just redundant I think.

Thursday: RHP Archie Bradley

Friday: RHP Jeffrey Shields

Saturday: LHP John Pedrotty

Sunday: Off

Monday: RHP Jesse Darrah

Tuesday: RHP J.R. Bradley

Again, subject to change, and if it does … you will be the first to know.

A self-promotional programming note. Thursdays game — and all games for that matter — can be found here. I will also post a link in the blog. You can also click “Multimedia / Silver Hawks Broadcasts” on http://www.silverhawks.com. Whatever floats your boat, really.

Veteran Bunch

Good morning,

Just two days away from baseball in Bowling Green. Real briefly here before I put the finishing touches on the media guide… This team is an older, veteran group of guys. This year’s opening day roster features just four players younger than 21 years old, it’s not unheard of to have around 20 players that young on any given roster. The Silver Hawks also return 10 players that have at one point or another worn a Silver Hawks uniform.

J.R. Bradley  /  Tyler Green  /  Kable Hogben  / Jeffrey Shields  /  Tyson Van Winkle  /  Niko Gallego  /  Matt Helm  /  Gerson Montilla  /  Bobby Stone  /  Ender Inciarte

So welcome back to those guys and to the newcomers as well. If you haven’t seen the roster you can refer to the post below. It should also be posted on the Web site at some point this morning.

Before I forget… Rock-Chalk-Champion– oh wait, nevermind.
